County Rt.73 Bridge Award

At the Lindley Town Board meeting on Wednesday June 9,2010 ,County Legislator Robert Nichols (who represents the Town of Lindley at the County level)presented Lindley Town Supervisor ,Richard Biggio with a plaque representing an award to Steuben County Public Works Department for it's work on the 221 foot County Rt.73 bridge in Lindley in 2009.(See attached article).

The new 2 lane bridge replaced a long existing series of one lane bridges over the Tioga River in the hamlet of Lindley. 2 lane bridges at each end of the town (Presho and Lawrenceville,Pa.)have been present for many years. The new 2 lane bridge in the center of the town was a vast improvement for the area and was the first in 219 years. At the 220 year birthday party on Sunday,we learned that before bridges existed,a ford in the river was located just north of the series of bridges.

Mr. Nichols stated that receiving the award was quite an achievement as competition was highly competitive. The Lindley bridge was in competition against a bridge in Buffalo and several other towns in the state.

Those of us who use the bridge frequently appreciate the improvement. Good things do come to those who wait-patiently!!!.

  1. The Lindley ford in the river is mentioned in the deed of my parents' 10 acre farm they bought from the Koplin estate in Lindley in 1940. I have waded in the ankel-deep water in the ford many times! Ellis Grist
