The slide rule was a simple device with one sliding part that could do complex mathematical calculations in moments. Multiplication, division, roots, logarithms, and even trigonometry could be performed with ease. But as technology marched forward with sophisticated computers and graphing pocket calculators, the lowly slide rule was forgotten.

The online encyclopedia then goes on at length to describe the history, use of, and eventual obsolescence of the slide rule. You can read the article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slide_rule.

Loper, a former resident of Athens ,who is charged with surreptitiously carrying off a baritone horn, a coronet ,and a clarinet belonging to the Athens band. At Lawrenceville while the officer was dictating a telegraphic message, his prisoner made a break for liberty and escaped over the New York stateline, which was only a few rods distant. Loper refused to come back over the line and resisted the officer when he "reached for him". But he was finally collared and dragged back into Pennsylvania and then handcuffed for the rest of the journey to Athens..Kitty Piercehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00237440506483261404noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-985443208357943655.post-73188581685416530632019-01-11T12:58:00.000-05:002019-01-11T12:58:02.848-05:00Penna.
A period of warm weather following a cold spell or a hard frost Indian summer can occur between St.Martin's Day (November 11) and November 20. Although there are differeing dates for its occurrance, for more than 225 years the Almanac has adhered to the saying"If All Saints' (November 1 ) brings out winter, St.Martin's brings out Indian summer." The term may have come frrom an early Native Americans, some of whom believed that the condition was caused by a warm wind sent from the court of their south-western god-Cautantowwit.
Last Thursday at noon there was a wedding at St. Peter's Church , Miss Mary Trahey being united to Mr. George H.Young of Elmira,N. Y. . Miss Maggie Trahey, sister of the bride , acted as bridesmaid and Mr. John Young ,the groom's twin brother ,was the best man. There was a reception at the home of Mr. Patrick Sullivan, on Meade street, after the ceremony and a sumptuous wedding breakfast was served. The bride was the recipient of many handsome and useful presents. Mr.and Mrs. Young left on the afternoon train for Elmira where a home already furnished awaited them . Mr. Young formerly resides at Antrim , but his ability as a practical machinist and electrician secured him a position a year ago in the light section at Elmira. Miss Trahey was a successful teacher in the Antrim schools for several years. The guests from out of town in attendance at the wedding were Miss Kate and Nora Trahey and Mary Burke of Troy ,and Messrs. Daniel and William Shannon of Canton .We trust that long life and happiness may attend the estimable young couple.Kitty Piercehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00237440506483261404noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-985443208357943655.post-67852853127200841262018-10-11T11:06:00.000-04:002018-10-11T11:06:06.267-04:00Looking at old newspaper articles Times Past
The Tobacco Crop
The crop of tobacco in the Cowanesque Valley this year is above the average both in quantity and quality of leaf according to the Westfield Free Press which says the price for it would be highly gratifying . The acreage has dwindled year by year owing to the chances taken in getting a good crop and the rather low price that has prevailed for tobacco in the bundle . The work of harvesting is nearly complete.
Many thanks to all the about 60 Lindsley family descendants, friends, families, neighbors and participants who visited the Lindsley Burying Ground- Lindley ,NY on September 8th, 2018 to pay tribute to Samuel Lindsley Revolutionary War Patriot and a member of the Lindsley family that settled in Lindley in 1790.

A special thanks to the NSDAR ladies from the Kanestio Valley Chapter , The Baron Steuben Chapter and NSSAR groups who conducted an impressive ceremony honoring Samuel. The DAR Chapters led the ceremony with the Welcome, Invocation and Singing of the National Anthem, and Dedication of the DAR plaque. Also, included in the program was the history of Samuel and the results of research presented by his descendant, history of Revolutionary War flags by the SAR, proclamations from NYS and the Pomeroy Foundation (roadside marker donation), a history of the Burying Ground and the posting and retiring of the colors by the SAR Chapters. The Benediction was given by a descendant from Texas.

Following the ceremony, a reception with refreshments was held at the Rotsell Resturant in Lawrenceville,Penna where the guests shared information, genealogies and friendships.

So finally, Samuel Lindsley, a youth during the Revolutionary War was honored along with his father and 2 brothers-in -law who are, also, buried in the cemetery. His name does not appear on the roadside marker placed in 2016 since the research still had not documentd his service. The descendants came from South Carolina,Texas and locally. Today, local directories do not have many names listed for Lindsley/Mulford or Seelye Lindley,New York's earliest settlers.

This old photo was in a trunk donated by a family member.

Not sure who or where , but it depicts a scene typical of our area's early history when lumbering was a big business in the early to mid 1800's.

Fox-Weston-Bronson and the Harrower-Mersereau families owned considerable property in the Lindley area where they carried out the lumbering business. Colonel Lindsley had the 1st local sawmill.

.

Numerous sawmills were located along the Tioga River and even a small railroad in the vicinity of the present Young's family farm carried logs to the Tioga River . The logs were floated to the Gang Mills -a large type of saw. Hence the place became known as Gang Mills .

.

Other logs, lumber, grain, produce, etc. were floated on arks down the local rivers to the Chesapeake Bay Area. When the lumber supply became depleted locally, Fox, Weston , Bronson who had become the largest lumber company in the country moved to the woods in Michigan . .

Lots of 40 acres of land locally now became available for sale. Many of the local families followed the industry to Michigan where their descendants can trace them in their genealogical files .

The Mersereau family had become associated with the Weston family and together they opened the first sawmill on the Allegany River near the present town of Weston. The Mersereau family genealogy shows members of this family later involved in the lumber industry in the State of Washington.

.

Gradually the tree growth returned, but for years the local hills were labeled 'denuded' much like the ones where clear forest cutting is exercised today.

The Thanksgiving story you know probably goes a bit like this: English Pilgrims, seeking religious freedom, landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts, where they found a rich land full of animals and were greeted by a friendly Indian named Squanto, who taught them how to plant corn.
The true story is more complicated. Once you learn about the real Squanto — also known as Tisquantum — you’ll have a great yarn to tell your family over the Thanksgiving table.
<img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-20516" data-attachment-id="20516" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-description="" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="tisquantum" data-large-file="https://eogn.files.wordpress.com/2017/11/tisquantum.jpg?w=740?w=470" data-medium-file="https://eogn.files.wordpress.com/2017/11/tisquantum.jpg?w=740?w=300" data-orig-file="https://eogn.files.wordpress.com/2017/11/tisquantum.jpg?w=740" data-orig-size="470,245" data-permalink="https://blog.eogn.com/2017/11/16/the-truth-youve-never-heard-about-plimoth-colony-and-the-first-thanksgiving/tisquantum/" sizes="(max-width: 470px) 100vw, 470px" src="https://eogn.files.wordpress.com/2017/11/tisquantum.jpg?w=740" srcset="https://eogn.files.wordpress.com/2017/11/tisquantum.jpg 470w, https://eogn.files.wordpress.com/2017/11/tisquantum.jpg?w=128 128w, https://eogn.files.wordpress.com/2017/11/tisquantum.jpg?w=300 300w" />
How is it that Squanto knew how to speak perfect English when the Pilgrims arrived?

Then the Pilgrims showed up in what is now Plymouth in 1620 and promptly started starving to death.
Columbus landed in 1492 on the island later called Hispaniola. Our history books seem to indicate that nothing else happened for 128 years until the Pilgrims arrived in 1620. Yet the Tisquantum story gives you this tiny peek into that all the people involved had been interacting for more than a century. The truth is that French sailors were on Cape Cod in 1620 and apparently sailors and explorers of other nations had been up and down the Atlantic coast for years. The Pilgrims from England (and even earlier from Leyden in the Netherlands) were only one of many groups in the area.
The writing of the petition indicates practiced hand, word applied and the spelling is correct except as to the word "applyd". The signatures are clear and most of them are businesslike. Evidentally, these signers had been taught penmanship. The ancient town record, nearly eighty years old is well worth preservation in showing the public spirit of the early settlers, and the earnest effort to secure an important public improvement. In those days much of the travel to the new settlements here came by way of Williamsport, the Block House and the Tioga River. The early settlers encountered great hardships ,and were subjected to much expense in keeping passable the lines of travel. The first road from what is now Blossburg was on the east side of the Tioga River, probably to avoid building bridges over Crooked Creek and the Cowanesque River.
The project for a new road indicates that the valley on the west side of the river north of Lawrenceville had become more or less cleared of the forest, and improvement demanded an outlet. The first bridge across the mouth of the Canisteo was not built till about 1833. The early inhabitants in all of these river valleys suffered much inconvenience, often serious peril by the spring and fall freshets that rendered fording impossible.

Notes by Kitty .
The road from Williamsport, Pa was called the Williamson Road after the founder of Bath, NY-- Col. Charles Williamson. It was started in 1792 in Nothumberland, Pa. The Block House is Liberty, Pa today. There is an annual Block House celebration there each summer.

Like most local residents, I was under the impression that the 1792 Road followed the path of old U.S. Rt.15 in Lindley until I read this article. It may explain why the Corning /Blossburg Railroad-1839/40 is on the east side of the Tioga River, also.

Thanks to Ellis Grist -(who grew up on the Koplin farm across the tracks from the present Harris Farm ), there is a copy of the deed of the Koplin/Grist farm ( Now in Town of Lindley Historian files at the Lindley Town Hall. ). The deed mentions a ford in the Tioga River on this property .This would be someplace close to the present Wetlands built during the I 99 highway construction. This FORD would have provided a crossing to the west side to the Tioga River

It is interesting to note that the designers of the present Interstate I99 -considered some of the same issues that Col. Williamson, Benjamin Patterson and the German road builders faced back in 1792..

The story of the building of the Williamson Road is a topic for another day. The Joyce Tice website has some of the story..

The old town of Painted Post, then included what is now the territory of six towns, viz. Lindley, Caton , Corning, Hornby, Erwin and Campbell. The above document evidently originated in Lindley where most of the signatures were procured, but to give it force and ensure compliance , the names of prominent farmers or business men residing in the vicinity of the "Painted post" were obtained. John Knox was the founder of Knoxville (now called Corning Northside), Capt. Samuel Erwin was the grandfather of Samuel S. Erwin of Corning and was the son of Col. Arthur Erwin who purchased the wilderness (in 1789 )-- which is now the township of Erwin. Frank Erwin was the brother of Capt. Erwin . Rufus Gorton was for the series of years the owner of Mill property below where the village (Corning )now stands. (Gorton Cemetery is on Park Ave-Corning ). Henry Mc Cormick resided east where Gibson now lies. Robert T. Bonham was a farmer in vicinity of Painted Post. These signers were not especially interested as the improved road was to the south (of Corning). It says -it was to run to the "Cansateer" which doubtless meant the junction of the Canisteo River with the Tioga six miles south of the "Painted post. " Of the other signers James Ford was Judge Ford of Lawrenceville,Pa, Eleazer Lindsley was the Judge and Postmaster mentioned. Dr. Ezekiel Mulford was the son-in -law of Col.Lindsley, the pioneer, and he was the grandfather of William O. Campbell of Corning, John P.Ryerrs was the owner of the four thousand acre tract east of the Tioga River (-from Erwin town line to Tannery Creek Rd --Tioga River to Caton town line ----purchased from Col.Lindsley in 1792 --- when Col. Lindsey sold the south end of the 6 square mile tract of land that he purchased in 1789 ).
Benjamin Patterson was the famous hunter and guide.

It is noticeable that the petitioners are somewhat peremptory in their language, as they not only request but 'enjoin' the Road Commissioners to grant the specified appropriation

. Such a petition now would be regarded as a command, and be for that reason rejected.
